Hitachi-LG Announces HyDrive – Solid State Drive Embedded Optical Disk Drive
Hitachi-LG Data Storage has today announced the world’s first ever Optical Disk Drives embedded with solid state drive (SSD). The device called HyDrive is expected in Q1 next year that would offer fast read and write speeds and high SSD capacities, making them ideal storage solution for read-intensive applications requiring high performance and plug-and-play compatibility.
The HyDrive Optical Disk Drives embedded with solid state drive (SSD) would come in two phases with first phase includes SSD capacity of 32GB and 64GB with future upgrade in phase two with SSD capacity enhanced to up to 256GB.
Expected to be commercially available in Q1 next year the HyDrive is ideal alternative to a 7,200 RPM SATA Hard Disk Drive (HDD) for anyone seeking increased durability and performance with high reliability and boasted to feature even faster SSD performance moving from SATA 3.0Gb/s interface to the much faster SATA 6.0 Gb/s interface.
HyDrive Optical Disk Drives embedded with solid state drive (SSD) is designed to offers PC users benefit from enhanced multi-tasking capabilities and improved system responsiveness so their everyday computing experience can be much more productive.
With no moving parts as in traditional hard disk drives, everyday task such as booting up, launching and running applications are much faster with HyDrive optical drive. In addition, with no moving parts, files are less likely to be lost due to disk drive failure providing mobile end-users and others who rely heavily on their data.
The HyDrive Optical Drives performance is expected to get first fitted on high performance notebooks such as the ASUS N61DA, delivering data handling capabilities currently unavailable to consumers worldwide.
The HyDrive Optical Disk Drives embedded with solid state drive offers hard disk drive (HDD) performance boosting by using the entire SSD as a cache by the HLDS filter driver coupled with Windows and Microsoft Office applications installed and the remaining capacity serve as a cache.
The HyDrive offers a peak read speed of 175 MB/s and is capable of writing at a maximum 60MB/s and company claims it can be upto 60% faster than a conventional 7500 rpm rotating hard drive for booting up and loading apps.
